The title of Couch to 5K says it all. The app is designed to get you into 5K shape over the course of nine weeks, helping people with no previous training to run the entire 5K without walking or stopping. It’s basically a list of running workouts that slowly ramp up your abilities over time. Couch to 5K is basically set up so that anybody can use it effectively, regardless of schedule: Each workout takes about 30 or 40 minutes, three times a week.
Simplicity in Couch to 5K is one of its strengths. Each workout listing explains what you need to do, starting with a list of stretches with diagrams and a description of the warm-up and run. The exercises include a stopwatch to keep track of each portion of the workout (such as the five-minute warm-up and walking and running sections), as well as the ability to incorporate music from your smartphone’s iPod feature.
Couch to 5K is a good way to increase your fitness and become a better athlete, but for $2.99, there aren’t many features. The price is a little high for a glorified stopwatch with some workout suggestions — and most of the information here is available for free online. If you don’t mind the cost, though, it’s a nice, simple app.
