Get HappyCow VeginOut!
Vegans and vegetarians can finally eat out and enjoy a tailored menu just for them. With HappyCow VeginOut by HappyCow, easily pinpoint local vegan and vegetarian restaurants with up-to-date information. Though the app doesn’t boast the most sophisticated user interface, we think it’s the details that count most. We recommend this app to any vegetable-loving smartphone user.

This no-frills app from online vegan- and vegetarian-restaurant guide HappyCow is aimed at vegetarians and vegans who want a dining-out experience without discovering that they can hardly eat anything on the menu.
Although this app lacks most of the gorgeous photos of both Foodspotting and Alfred, it does offer a lot of information. HappyCow filters places by Vegan, Vegetarian, Veg-Friendly and Stores n’ More, as well as maps of the restaurants and stores for you. One big advantage of this app is that its information appears to be updated regularly by HappyCow (we learned a new vegetarian place around the corner had just opened up last month!), and it also provides the establishment’s type of food, price points, website and general information. The HappyCow app is all about diversity: It lists several kinds of restaurants, including Japanese, Indian, macrobiotic, organic and even artisan pizza.
Unfortunately, both the Android and iPhone apps are not created equal. The iPhone version is slightly better with a prettier and easier user interface and costs $2.99 in the App Store. The Android version is $1.89 without ads or free with some unobtrusive ads. The latter works well, but lacks a sophisticated user interface. We recommend first trying the free Android app to see if it’s worth the money.
