If you had to choose one app that would turn your iPhone (and as of June, your Android) into a highly useful tool for staying informed, it would be Instapaper. This app springs from an extremely simple idea: Save articles you’re reading on the Internet and access them later from your smartphone without a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.

Once you set up a free account and add the bookmarklet to your browser, anything you don’t have time to finish reading on your computer you can save to Instapaper with one click. Then, when you’re waiting in line or riding a bus or any of a thousand other things, you can whip open the app and finish what you were reading earlier.

Instapaper includes lots of handy little features that enhance the experience. Articles are stripped of irritating ads, distracting pictures, and slow-loading video, making reading the actual articles very easy and clean. The app also lets you share what you’re reading with others via Facebook and Twitter—and it’s a two-way street: It also gives you access to recommended articles from friends and Instapaper editors, so you always have something to read.

Instapaper is one of those apps you’ll find yourself using all the time because, well, it’s just so handy.
