Lookout Mobile Security

Most people who download apps may not realize their smartphone is actually a very small computer that can contract viruses or be infiltrated with malware and spyware just like a desktop. Last March, the Android Market had a security breach, and several apps were found to contain malware that gave hackers access to all of the phone owner’s information and could let a third party take over the smartphone remotely. Enter Lookout, a San Francisco-based start-up that saw a chance to fill a niche.

Lookout Mobile Security gives smartphones the same security as a laptop or desktop by scanning all apps and making sure there are no viruses or other infected programs. The app also offers a few other perks, such as locating your lost phone online or finding it using “Scream,” which emits a loud alarm to announce its location even if your phone is set to silent.

While Lookout is obviously trying to make money on its Lookout Mobile Security Pro version ($29.99 a year), this free version gives you a necessary level of security from dangerous downloads and peace of mind when buying from app markets.
