No, you’re not dreaming. You really can manage all of your instant messaging services in one place. No need to peck around between Facebook, Google Talk, and MSN Live Messenger while juggling different conversations. Meebo works with eight popular services, including the three just listed, plus AIM, MySpace, Yahoo!, ICQ, and Jabber. If you want more IM services and social networks, set up a Meebo account and — voila! — more than 50 services are supported.
The app is very easy to set up and use: Just enter your chat network information and start chatting. Recent conversations appear in a new group at the top of your buddy list, and push notifications alert you to messages — even when you close the app. With a Meebo account, the app will keep a history of your conversations, which can be very handy (“Yes, you definitely said that!”). Other great features include “now typing” notifications, away messages, message copying, and swiping between chats.
We’ve heard some people complain about push notifications draining battery life, which is a fair gripe. We’ve also heard that spotty network coverage can result in lost connections and automatic logout. And spam over IM may become ultra-maddening with so many chat clients beeping at you all day. Still, if you’re into IM, this free app is pretty much a dream come true.
