Gameloft, the developer behind the sci-fi first-person shooter N.O.V.A. series, is known for creating games that are a lot like popular video games of the console gaming world. N.O.V.A. 2 is a whole lot like Microsoft’s Halo series, but that’s not a bad thing — on the contrary, it means that N.O.V.A. 2 has some great shooter sensibilities, borrowing a bit from some of the best games in the genre and bringing those conventions to the iPhone.
High-powered 3D graphics and gyroscopic aiming controls make N.O.V.A. 2 a more visceral experience than other iOS shooters and even some shooters found on consoles and PCs. Looking around and moving are handled by swiping virtual buttons, while aiming can be controlled by moving the device around in 3D space, which feels pretty intuitive. N.OV.A. 2 packs an 11-mission, single-player story campaign, plus an online multiplayer death match mode (in which players can take on other human opponents, using a Wi-Fi connection). That’s a whole lot of solid gunplay for just $7, making N.O.V.A. 2 one of the top first-person shooters in the App Store.
