N.O.V.A. 3 (Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance) is, in a word, awesome.
This first-person shooter game is a continuation of the very popular N.O.V.A. series that pits Kal Wardin (you) against a throng of Volterites (satanic-looking, red-winged creatures that will end you), this time on a futuristic, abandoned planet Earth.
The graphics on this game app are pristine, maybe even better than the impressive Infinity Blade II graphics we raved about at the end of last year. The details, movement (360-degree views available in all shooting directions), and speed in which you play the game are remarkable—crystal clear, very lifelike and influenced by your actions. The developers at Gameloft have outdone themselves here. Even the city itself seems built exactly to scale with no detail spared.
But this is no mindless shoot ’em up game. Like the other N.O.V.A. games, this version comes with a story. Your character, Kal Wardin, the steel-suited super shooter, is called back to planet Earth to help fellow troops rid the planet of the Volterites, a surprise visitor to the destroyed, unpopulated rock we humans used to live on. Using a variety of cinematic devices—a re-entry into the planet’s atmosphere; distinctive, strong voice-over work; and sound effects that are straight out of a Hollywood tent pole (not to mention some good old-fashioned story telling)—N.O.V.A. 3 vaults you right into the sci-fi world and primes you for action.
For those of you N.O.V.A. 1 and 2 veterans, gameplay will appear as it did in the first two versions, but with noticeable improvements to all physical action and weapon display. In this puppy, you land heavily armed, so shoot away. You’ll do damage.
The screen layout is easy to manipulate and understand and retain for first timers. When you pause or need to give your fingers a rest, you’re given the opportunity to upgrade your weapons, brush up on your objectives, restart the checkpoint or level, change your options, or resume. You can also quit, but you won’t want to.
You’ve been warned, this game is very addictive. If you like concept first-person shooter games, N.O.V.A. 3 is a must-have. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for it, and expect a very long load time (the app is 1.44 GB). But any game with this much to offer is going to be worth the wait.
Recapp tip: Close this app when you’re done with it to avoid battery drain, or check to see if your version is on Verizon’s list of apps that may be draining your Android battery life.
