Snake is a vintage arcade video game that originated in the 1970s. It gained most of its popularity when Nokia pre-loaded it on all of their phones in 1998. Today, app developers at Zing! did a good job mimicking the Nokia original and brought this little gem to the iPhone.
Once you sign in to Game Center using your Apple ID, the app gives you the option of Classic or Extreme game mode. (Extreme mode is timed.) Next, choose between four different fields (open field, box, hole in the wall or 4square) and five snake speeds that range from slow to fast.
In the classic game, you navigate a snake around the screen in order to consume apples and gain length. Bonus green apples only appear for a few seconds but reap twice as many points as the red. The game is over when you run the snake into itself or into a wall.
The fact that you use a touch screen to go up, down, right or left is both a pro and a con, in our opinions. It’s extremely responsive to the direction you want the snake to go, but it takes a level of precision and good timing. If you hit the arrow a millisecond too early or too late, the snake will slither right past the apple. Practice is key in this game.
Snake Classic is very close to the original video game, but you can always enjoy fancy upgrades, such as changing the color of the snake, customizing the wallpaper and sharing high scores on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Other variations of the classic game are available for Android and Blackberry smartphones.
