TED. If this name conjures your friendly neighbor or the name of an old pet, then it’s probably time you get out from under that rock you’ve been living for five years. TED (representing the nonprofit’s goal of bringing Technology, Entertainment and Design masterminds together) is the name of the über-inspiring national conferences and website, with a mission of “spreading ideas.” The TED app is long overdue.

If you’re not familiar with TED, here’s a quick description: TED is a library of video talks at the renowned TED conferences, given by captains of industry, leaders of spiritual communities and other intelligent walks of life that cover a wide array of topics. (One of our favorites was the talk from Thomas Suarez, 12-year-old app developer.) In short, TED is great stuff. If you look long enough, you’ll find someone you know of, or stumble across something you’re riveted by.

Just like the site, the TED app is something you won’t be able to just launch, browse and walk away from. The developers have done an outstanding job re-creating the possibilities the site offers.

Once you launch the app, you will be offered the choice of TED featured videos: random video selections, new videos and popular videos. We browsed videos about genealogy, patent law, birth control, biotechnology and a woman playing a banjo. Sure, you might not know who any of these people are (we only knew one) but you’re guaranteed to learn plenty about them and much more if you watch their videos.

None of those videos catch your fancy? No problem. Hit “Inspire Me” and nine varying categories allow you to watch something a little more tailored to your current interest. You can even choose talks alphabetically (this is a good resource if someone has referred a talk to you), search, and create your own list of favorites you can watch again and again.

Now, anybody who watches video on their phones knows what kind of a pain in the rear end it can be. They won’t load, they freeze up, they go black if you drop out of Wi-Fi range—it can be very frustrating. That’s why this app has found a solution. It offers audio talks that augment or offer an alternative when the video just won’t play. It’s a great solution to the eternal broadband issue. Until that is fixed, TED brings a solid solution.

Overall, this app does TED proud. If it’s knowledge, inspiration or a better way to kill some time you are after, TED the app is the way to go. Tell your friends and neighbors. Especially the ones named Ted.
