The Tetris app is a quality version of the classic game, but experienced players may find it a bit easy. For newbies, though, the mobile version is a great introduction to this fast-paced puzzle game.

The puzzle game that hooked many video gamers, Tetris has gotten a spiffy shine-up and a new game-play mode for its debut on all major smartphone platforms. Developer Electronic Arts set up the game with easy-to-manage touch controls: Swipe and tap to rotate blocks consisting of individual bricks and drop them into interlocking structures (like a jigsaw puzzle). The goal is to fit the blocks together to make an uninterrupted line of bricks that stretches across the playfield. Points are earned for making complete lines, which then drop and clear out. You’re trying to clear lots of lines at once while avoiding letting the bricks pile up.
The app is a quality version of the classic game, but it might be a little on the easy side. New features include a “holding area” where you can move blocks you’re not ready to use yet, which means you’re not forced to use blocks as they come. That allows for some strategy, but it also gets you out of sticky situations that would otherwise force you to make the tough decisions and fast moves the classic Tetris is known for. There are other new changes to the game play, but these also take away a lot of the original challenges.
If you’re a Tetris newbie, EA’s mobile version is a great introduction to this fast-paced puzzle classic.
