You’re looking at a chest. It’s imposing, mysterious, and in 3D. As you rotate the chest on its axis using your device’s touch screen, the intricacies and clues embedded in the chest’s panels start to emerge. You tap on a surface twice, and you zoom in. Once closer, you find a key and the journey begins. The goal: to solve the mystery of the chests and find the null element, thus unlocking the power of... The Room.
Welcome to The Room, a stroke of visual and tactile genius in a world where 2D action apps and simple word games have once ruled. Play once and you’ll realize what a tremendous breath of fresh air it is. (We recommend playing on the iPad’s large screen.)
The first thing to know about The Room is this: If you’re looking for a quick two-minute distraction, The Room isn’t for you. This app will suck you in and lock you down with its three levels:
- The mental: As you read the eerie, opening letter from your long-lost colleague about what is in store for you (should you choose to proceed), you’ll have to remember the letter’s contents. This motif carries throughout the game as you play. Several bits and pieces of cryptic and incomplete information are meted out for you to process and progress, and it’s up to you to put the clues together in order to move forward.
- The physical: 3D can be tricky in game apps. If not done well, it looks cumbersome and cheap. That is definitely not the case with The Room. The beautiful 3D graphics allow you to use your touch screen to sweep over an object, zoom in and out, manipulate intricate devices, unlock doors and drawers, possess and implement items, and move about your surroundings. Minus a goofy-looking reaching hand, it feels as if you could be standing right in the game’s setting. Especially because of the third component. Which is...
- The emotional: The Room is flat-out scary. From the way light sources strike objects which are the focus of your attention, to the floating specks of dust in the air, to the spooky, gold-inlaid carvings and threatening messages, to the haunting music—it all creates an intimate and imminent feeling of threat and danger during gameplay.
If you get stuck in the game, tap the question mark at the top left corner of the screen and you’ll get subtle clues that will put you back on the right track. The question mark is your friend. Don’t be afraid to use it.
So say goodbye to your afternoon workload, or sitting down to dinner at the table on time. The Room is the kind of app that will make you feel as if though you’ve glued your hands to your iPad because you can’t put it down.
