Whether you’re hitting the beach, planning a picnic, or taking a road trip, it’s helpful to know what kind of weather to expect out there. The Weather Channel app will help you do just that.

To see what’s on the horizon, all you have to do is enter your ZIP code or grant the app access to your current location. Look ahead just a few hours or as far as ten days. The Android version even has its own widget that you can pin to your phone’s home screen, so you’ll always be in the know about sunny skies and scary windstorms. You can also pin a Live Tile of The Weather Channel app to your Start screen on Windows Phone devices.

Viewing the current weather gives you the appropriate illustration (sunny, partly cloudy, etc.), plus the temperature. But you also get more detailed information, including what the temperature really feels like, wind speed and direction, humidity, the UV index, visibility and the dew point, plus sunrise and sunset times.

There are also must-see weather videos (updated daily), seasonal forecasts and the ability to save favorite locations so you can easily come back and check the weather for your favorite vacay spots. Plus, you can watch ominous rain clouds on the radar map.

Set push notification alerts for severe weather in your area. Or, if allergies get the best of you every spring, you can also set pollen push notification alerts—you’ll know when to bring an extra pack of tissues.

We love that we can customize the background and add one of our own photos for an extra personal touch. (Our photo is currently a sunset in Koh Tao, Thailand—ah, how we long for summer.)

This app has a great design, and it works flawlessly. In our opinion, it’s quite possibly the very best weather app available. You can shell out a few bucks for the Max version which adds extra features, is even easier to use and includes no ads.
